Part 5 - All Work & No Play Makes Johnny Cranky!

Did you know that rest is God's Idea?

Part 5 of our series concerns the Fourth Commandment.  That's right, we've talked about work - now let's see what the bible says about something equally as important - R E S T !  Sharon has gained a whole new respect for this commandment!

Remember The Sabbath - And Keep It Holy.

Sharon was absolutely exhausted.  She was practically obsessed about her new internet business.  After putting in an 8 hour day at her “regular job” (which she hoped to be able to quit soon), she would put in another five hours at night on her internet business.  The weekends were golden time!  She could put in 12 hours a day – two days in a row.  She’d be out of that old day job in no time!  Right?  Wrong.  Sharon put one of God’s principles on a “back-burner” with the expectation of “getting back to that day of rest” after her business was up and running.  We don’t know more than our Father!  He told us to rest for several very good reasons.  Sharon’s internet business is a flop.  She wound up spiritually bankrupt and is now resting - all the time – she hasn’t the strength or energy to do anything else!

Time for a refresher on the scriptures regarding refreshing:

Did you know that rest was God’s idea?

For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day.  Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.  Exodus 20:11

If it was good enough for God, it’s good enough for me!

It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested.  Exodus 31:17

And He didn’t just suggest it, He commanded it.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Exodus 20:8

There is always blessing in obeying our Father.

“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob”.  Isaiah 58

Now Sharon knew all these things, but she thought her circumstances justified a break from this command.  Had she consulted with the Lord, I believe He just might have led her to this scripture:

“Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest;  even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.  Exodus 34:21

I thank God for His command that we rest.  You see, I am very much like “Sharon” and often have to discipline myself to take that day of rest.  I get so excited about what the Lord is allowing me to do to obtain my support that I just don’t want to stop!  But He is absolutely right.  Monday’s seem to be my most productive day – I’m more creative, energetic and reignited after a day away from the work.  And, I spend the day Sunday being spiritually fed so I can start the new week with a full tank.

I know Sunday can’t be the “day of rest” for some of us – those of us who preach or have some task in the church.  However, we must take one day each week to just rest in the Lord.  This is the best investment you can make with your time in the long run!

Speaking of investing…are we reinvesting the prosperity God is giving us into His kingdom?  In the Part Six, we’ll talk about a critical understanding of God’s math.  It makes no sense to our mathematicians – but it is most accurate!

BLESS YOU!
